To me, the name "Smegma" says "harsh noise/power electronics and bodily fluids," something along the lines of Aaron Funk and Hecate's Nymphomatriarch project. But no, while kind of noisy, the music isn't particularly harsh - it consists of tape loops, found sounds, much echo and delay, a few "rock" songs, and some guy ranting about things like toenail clippings. Apparently I've been under a rock somewhere as Smegma have been around in one for or another for over thirty years, had ties to Zappa and count rock crit. Richard Meltzer (toenail clipping man?) among their contributors. And that's the hitch, thirty years ago this might have been cutting edge, in an annoying avant sort of way, now, aside from the garage rock excursions (which seem really out of place), it comes across as quaint. 7/10 --
